September / October 2024
We all look forward to this time of year as the days become longer and we start to see maximum temperatures starting with a 2! It becomes easier to remember to put ice on when we’ve hurt ourselves or overdone it or even after an adjustment if necessary.
There are many theories and discussion around the use of ice so it’s not a simple recommendation. Ice should be used in early stages of injury when the swelling is active. The ice will decrease the blood flow, provide pain relief and reduce compression of the surrounding healthy tissue as long as it’s used correctly.
Applying ice for 10 minutes is enough time to achieve this and once the ice is removed the blood flow is restored and this helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the damaged tissue which helps to clean up the swelling.
Depending on the severity of the injury it can be helpful to move around once the ice is removed (in the case of an overworked back or post adjustment) or if the injury is acute and severe then applying compression and elevating the injury is more appropriate (after a fall or a sprained ankle). Leave the ice off for at least 45 mins between applications and usually three times in a day is sufficient. Heat is useful for stiffness or muscle soreness and shouldn’t be used on a recent injury.
With family visiting and a few unusual events to attend, Tracey’s hours are quite random during September! If you’re unsure if we’re open, head to Google for updated hours or leave us a message at any time and we’ll return your call when we’re back in the office.
