January / February 2024

Happy New Year! 2024 is here already!? Let's hope it's a better year than ever for everyone... wouldn't that be amazing?

Of course Dr Lydia and many of you will be celebrating the New Year in February. Dr Lydia is looking forward to celebrating with her family in Penang and holidaying with them in Da Nang, Vietnam also. Her last day will be Friday 2nd of February and she'll be back on Monday the 19th...a well-earned break!

Apart from a day off for the first day of the cricket Test in Adelaide, Tracey will be here during January and February to enjoy Adelaide's summer months. She has trips planned for March, April and May so she'll be happy to be home for now, taking care of patients and her fruit trees...and of course a bit of golf!

Elaine has family visiting from the UK and Isla is off to Sydney so you may see an unfamiliar face at the desk during this time too.

As Chiropractors we're always interested in learning more about how our body works and how we can stay healthy. Tracey recently came across some interesting research about breathing. Most people are aware that it's better to inhale through your nose and breathe out through your mouth.

Interestingly, by inhaling through your nose your sinuses produce nitrous oxide which is delivered to the upper lung causing dilation of the blood vessels and thus increasing your ability to absorb oxygen. The more oxygen in our body the better we function, especially our brain. Research compared nose breathing to mouth breathing in a series of difficult tasks to come to this conclusion.

Having the ability to breathe through your nose is important for many reasons, not just improving your oxygen supply. Your sinuses warm and humidify the air as well as cleaning it.

Another fun fact to keep your sinuses working better is to spend 5-10 seconds each day humming. The resonance created by humming vibrates the lining of the sinuses as you exhale loosening particles for easier expulsion. Humming also clears the particle filled dead air from the depths of the sinus cavities. Try this easy 10 second task each day for a week to see if you notice any changes. It may even improve your mood too?
